The Four Agreements

Review
The author, Don Miguel Ruiz, exposes self-limiting beliefs and presents a simple yet effective code of personal conduct learned from his Toltec ancestors. Oprah Winfrey has also spoke of the work that Don Ruiz. Ruiz, was born into a Mexian family of traditional healers, became a surgeon in adulthood, then underwent a near-death experiennce that made him reexamine his life, his beliefs.

This is a book for anyone making an elementary change in life.  It is a wonderful book for stress management and personal growth.  It's written in simple language, but deals with complex themes.

It is important that as a reader you do not get tied-up or confused with the authors talk about the "Dream."  It can get confusing.  Do not let this deter you from getting the core message of the book.

There are four agreements and they are:
Be impeccable with your word
Don't take anything personally
Don't make assumptions
Always do your best

While these simple concepts might be obvious to some, they are wonderful reminders of the importance of stopping, taking a step back, and re-evaluating habits and priorities.

The Four Agreements offer a wealth of useful guidelines for living your dream, but the job of implementing them and breaking free of the old agreements is where the real work lies.  This book has the potential to change your life - if you let it.  To accomplish this change takes a willingness to dedicate yourself to the principles Ruiz presents.  Fortunately, he has added a companion book, The Four Agreements Companion Book, to aid in the process of adopting these habits into your lifestyle.

Is this book just New Age junk?  Maybe.  But to the L-Coaches it makes a great deal of sense.  Sometimes the most elegant solutions grow from the simplest of ideas.

Content
The Four Agreements are:
Be Impeccable with Your Word
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Don't Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.

Don't Make Assumptions
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstances, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.
